While only indrectly related to Bitcoin, Nostr is another project that uses cryptography as technology to provide freedom and censorship resistance to the masses. It is not a currency like Bitcoin, and it does not use a Blockchain, but it does use Public/Private cryptographic keypairs as a proof of identity for social media.

Nostr is social media as a protocol. Since your identity is held by you, on your device only, and not on a central server, it can never be turned off or disabled. Censorship is impossible on Nostr.

Since Nostr is not controlled by a single entity, there are many apps that support the protocol. You can take your identity and content from one app to another without losing anything.

Nostr notes are stored on relays, the Nostr name for servers. But unlike other social media, these relays can be run by anyone, without permission, and notes can be transferred freely between them.

Did I mention the best part about Nostr, is that payments via the Lightning Network are built into the protocol. So you can send and receive value to your peers as easily as clicking a "Thumbs Up" button.
